Walking With the Lord
When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way! ( Hymn 467 Trust and Obey )
I walk or jog everyday. I suppose it is a result of growing up in a big family in a small house. Walking was one way to get out of the house and be by myself. But I have never felt alone while walking. It is the time I feel closest to my Savior Jesus Christ.
Not surprisingly my favorite biblical resurrection story is about two disciples who are walking to the town of Emmaus three days after the crucifixtion of Jesus. They are full of doubt and sorrow as they walk along. Suddenly, they are joined by a third man who they do not recognize. This stranger quotes scripture and explains why the son of God had to die and the promises scripture has to offer for the future. When they reach the town the two disciples ask their new friend to stay with them at the inn. While eating supper the disciples suddenly recognized Jesus as he breaks the bread for the evening meal.
When I walk I sense God's presence in many ways. Walking is a prayerful time for me. Often new insights will illuminate some problem or concern. I will often begin my walking anxiously and end filled with peace and hopefulness I arrive home with clearer focus and renewed energy. I receive needed guidance, insight and spiritual strength for every circumstance.
The best part of walking is that I can do it anytime and anyplace. I have been known to walk the streets of Monroe in the middle of the night and in the severest weather. I walk in the parsonage basement and up and down hospital stairs. I walk the halls while I wait for an appointment. Wherever I am I can know the peace and joy that comes as I recognize that I have been walking and talking with the Lord.
