Sacred Harp Music Performed

St. Paul's enjoyed the beautiful sounds of Sacred Harp music during the prelude and postlude of the July 13 service. The music was performed by the Sacred Harp Quartet, made up of St. Paul attendees Lydia La Roux, Emilie La Roux, Jim Nordstrom, and John Fedosky.

Sacred Harp is a shape-note hymnody and singing tradition, characterized by its distinctive notation and a cappella, four-part harmonies. It's named after the songbook The Sacred Harp, first published in 1844, and is known for its unique style of singing, communal atmosphere, and emphasis on participation.

Summer Hymn Sing

The July Summer Hymn Sing has come and gone, leaving behind the joy of some truly great hymns! Check out the photos and think about joining the final Hymn Sing of the summer.

The Power of Communal Singing

adapted from “Discipleship Ministries - The United Methodist Church” https://www.umcdiscipleship.org

“Most of my early memories of singing happened in church. I sang and clapped enthusiastically every time we ended a service with “You Shall Go Out with Joy,” and I joined in loud and proud when we sang “Amazing Grace,” because I knew all the words. Church, for me, equaled singing. It would be impossible to recall a worship service that didn’t include singing.

As United Methodists, singing is in our DNA. Singing together is what some call a “mega-mechanism for bonding.” When we sing together, we align our breath and our focus toward the same goal, which, in the case of worship, is praising God and declaring what we believe to and with one another. In other words, it’s not just what we sing, but that we sing in worship that forms us.

In this week’s scripture, Col 1:15-28, Paul draws on the power of communal singing by quoting what scholars consider a communal hymn about Christ in the middle of his letter to the Colossians. When faced with plumbing the depths of the Incarnation, Paul turned to song. And through that song, Paul demonstrates what the image of the invisible means for us as the church, the body of Christ. In the extraordinary and the mundane, Christ came, and so, in the extraordinary and the mundane, we are called to embody Christ to the world with one another.”

How have you experienced God’s love and presence when you sing together in the St. Paul’s Church community?

Josephine, an Arpeggio Piano student, graced us with her talents during the July 20 service. Josephine has been studying piano for four years, with the last two at Arpeggio Piano Studio. Her dedication and love for music continue to grow, and she is excited to expand her musical journey this fall as she begins middle school at Wagar Middle School—where she will join the band as a flute player.

On Sunday, July 13, St. Paul's attendees enjoyed a special musical performance by Cathy Brodie and Liam Brodie.

Cathy Brodie, a long-time member of St. Paul's and Director of Praise Ringers, dedicated 25 years to teaching music education for MPS. She also taught part-time at EMU and MCCC.

Liam Brodie, a 2020 Monroe High School graduate, participated in the concert choir and Generations of Sound. Currently a senior at Wayne State University, he is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Special Education with a focus on Autism. For the past year and a half, Liam has been teaching as an elementary teacher for autistic students in Huron schools.

Thank you both for sharing your musical talents.

Lindsay, an Arpeggio Piano student, graced us with her talents during the July 6 service. She played the prelude, offertory, and postlude beautifully. Lindsay has been studying piano with Arpeggio for six years.

Thank you for sharing your music with us!

Passing care and love to others

The Care Craft Group meets every other Thursday at 9:30 AM in Fellowship Hall. Contact Emilie La Roux if you have any questions.

Care Craft Group

The Care Craft Group is a wonderful initiative that brings together people with a passion for crafting and charity. Their bi-weekly gatherings are not just about creating beautiful crafts, but also about fostering a sense of community and kinship. By gifting their handmade items, they spread joy and warmth throughout the community. It's a heartwarming example of how shared interests and generosity can enrich the lives of many. If you're looking to contribute to your community, this group is a delightful opportunity to do both. Projects created to date include: laminated bookmarks, letters included with care packages to those away at school, and paper flowers, Thanksgiving leaves.

Even if you don’t feel you are “crafty”, join us to visit, have coffee/tea and simply enjoy the time together.
